Chipmaker Intel has investigated the problem of increasing the number of cores on a chip through the Terascale Computing Research Program, which so far has produced two experimental chip with the number of cores 80 and 48 cores.
In November, Timothy Mattson Intel engineers caused a stir at the Supercomputer Conference 2010 when he told the audience that one of the Terascale chips - 48-core Single-chip Computer Cloud (SCC) - could theoretically be doubled to 1,000 cores.
Mattson, who is a principal engineer in Intel's Technology Lab Mikroposesor yag deliver that technology today allows the creation of 1000 cores but does not currently exist in the product design from Intel to produce processors with the number of cores that much.
